TSAVO EAST/WEST NATIONAL PARKS

Popularly, this is the land of the 'red elephants' .Red because the elephants soil themselves with the dominate red earth and they become reddish in colour.Tsavo East and West occupies 20,700 square kilometers. This park is divided into two areas-Tsavo East and Tsavo West- one of the world's largest wildlife sanctuaries. While considerable portions of the park have been opened and developed for tourism, a great tract to the north of the Galana River is closed to the ordinary tourist traffic.

Tsavo is an interesting mixture of extensive plains, steep rocky hills rising abruptly, a few river valleys with their fringes of tall green acacia and palm trees. Altitudes range from 300 meters in the Eastern section to 1,800 meters in the highest peaks of the Ngulia Hills.

The most important river area is the Athi/Tsavo/Galana complex while the Mzima springs is interesting and remarkable source of fifty millions of gallons of crystal clear water which come tumbling out of the lava each day to form a strange oasis. Here there is an underwater observation chamber built so that the huge herbivores, the hippo, can be viewed as it moves through the water, surrounded by fish and crocodile, completely undisturbed
Practically all of Kenya's wildlife is represented in the two Tsavos, but the dominant park animal is the elephant. Over 20,000 of these pachyderms roam the area, which also happens to be a black rhino stronghold. Lion and cheetah are frequently seen and the peak is famous for its historical lions that developed man-eating habits during the construction of the railroad at the end of the last century. The lesser Kudu is also common.
There is network of over 800kms of game viewing roads. Bird life is abundant in the park and new species are often met with. Sunbirds, hornbills, parrot, weavers, starlings, bustards and birds of prey are present in great numbers among the many species
